  3. Welcome to ╥The Cigar Companion Interactive╙  This Read Me First file provides you with the basics needed to get started on Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers.

  6. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  7.  
  8. Your Macintosh or Power Macintosh computer should have the following minimum system configuration:

  10. 256 (8-bit) color Macintosh (68040 CPU or Power Macintosh recommended)
  11. 4 MB of free memory (5 MB or more recommended)
  12. 13" color monitor (640x480 pixels)
  13. QuickTime¬ 2.0 or higher (included on CD-ROM)
  14. CD-ROM drive (double-speed recommended)
  15. System 7 or higher recommended

  18. INSTALLATION

  20. In Focus requires QuickTime (tm) 2.0 or higher. To install QuickTime and its associated files, double-click the "Installer" icon in the Install folder and follow the on-screen instructions.

  23. GETTING STARTED

  25. To start the application, double-click "The Cigar Companion Interactive" icon. (Note: You must have the CD-ROM in the drive to run the program.)  Power Mac users run the "The Cigar Companion Power Mac" program and non-Power Mac users run "The Cigar Companion 68" version of the program.

  27. After a series of splash screens, the Main Menu Screen will pop up displaying the five main navigational choices. The main areas are:

  29. - Topics - Includes eight areas; History, Growing Tobacco, Cigar Structure, Rolling A Cigar, Factory Tour, The Cigar Box, Glossary and 3D Gallery.

  31. - CigarFinder - Lets you find the perfect cigar based on your personal preferences.
  32.  
  33. - Cigar Directory - Contains over 1000 different cigars. Includes brand history, cigar band and cigar box artwork and category ratings.

  35. - Buying and Storing - Includes information on Buying, Selecting, Smoking and Storing Cigars. Also includes the Dossier and Shopping List.

  37. - Quit - Quits out of the program.

  39. You can choose from any of the five areas by moving your mouse over the area until it is ╥in color╙ and clicking once.

  42. TROUBLESHOOTING
  43.  
  44. This section addresses memory-related problems.  If you are having problems getting the application to run, or if video/sound are not operating properly, then try the following fixes.

  46. Turn off stuff you aren't using
  47. Free up as much memory (RAM) as possible by quitting all other active applications, disabling unnecessary Extensions and Control Panels, disabling Appletalk in the Chooser, and/or reducing the Disk Cache in the Memory control panel.  In the extreme case, you may want to disable everything except QuickTime and your CD-ROM software. (You must restart after making changes.)  If ╥About This Macintosh╔╙ (available under the Apple menu)  reports over 4700K as the ╥Largest Unused Block,╙ the problem should disappear when you run the application.

  49. Buy more RAM
  50. If you can't manage to free up enough memory using the above procedures, then it's probably time to buy some more RAM.   Not only will the application run better, but you will see an improvement in your other applications as well.
